This 1932 first edition, titled Snakes and Snake Bite in Iraq: A Handbook for Medical Officers, is a significant regional herpetological and medical work by Norman L. Corkill, M.B., Ch.B., F.Z.S. At the time of publication, Corkill was a former member of the Iraq Health Service and Professor of Zoology at the Royal College of Medicine in Baghdad. The volume was published for the Royal College of Medicine of Iraq by Baillière, Tindall and Cox, London. It is an octavo format work bound in the publisher’s original tan cloth. The contents provide a systematic survey of snake species found in Iraq, including field identification characteristics, distribution records, and nomenclature, with frequent references to the catalogues of G. A. Boulenger. The text is supplemented by black-and-white photographic plates, including Plate IV depicting Natrix tessellatus (The Tessellated Water Snake) and Plate VI showing Coluber Diadema (Clifford’s Whip Snake), both of which include scale rulers for size reference.
