Lot 281: A TIMURID DATED CALLIGRAPHIC PAGE, CENTRAL ASIA, 15TH CENTURY

The folio contains a central panel with two vertical columns of poetry executed in fine black nasta’liq script, separated by a gold-painted rule. The text is framed by decorative blue-ground borders adorned with intricate gold and white floral and foliate scrolls (islimi). Horizontal cartouches located above and below the central columns contain further lines of Persian verse. The margins include additional vertical lines of script. The upper horizontal panels are inscribed with "به نیسان فرستدم از پادشاه" (Sent to Nisan by the King) and "که از نامور مشتری میخواه" (Who seeks a buyer from the renowned). The lower panels contain the verses "جو قید او فرزند را بخواند" (When his bond called the son) and "سرت پر از تیزی و تندی کند" (Will make your head full of sharpness and haste). The piece is created using ink, opaque pigments, and gold leaf on paper. It is presented in a cream-coloured mount and housed in a later stepped wooden frame with a gilded inner fillet.
