Lot 226: AN OTTOMAN TINNED COPPER AND BRONZE HANDLED FISH CUP, 19TH CENTURY

An Ottoman tinned copper and bronze handled drinking bowl, traditionally known as a fish cup, dating to the late 19th. The vessel comprises a hand-raised copper bowl with a tinned surface, decorated with horizontal bands of engraved palmette and interlocking circle motifs. A cast bronze handle of scrolling foliate form is attached to the side, featuring a zoomorphic thumb rest. The interior centre of the bowl contains an articulated mechanism with three revolving bronze fish mounted on a central post, designed to move when liquid is poured into the vessel. A small, worn circular stamp with characters in Ottoman Turkish script is located on the centre of the base.
