Lot 170: A MONUMENTAL QAJAR PLANISPHERIC BRASS ASTROLABE, PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY

This very large scientific instrument is constructed from cast and engraved brass with a rich, aged golden patina. The decorative throne is shaped with a lobed, ogival profile and contains three cartouches featuring engraved Arabic calligraphic script. It is surmounted by a large circular suspension ring with a decorative scalloped outer edge, attached via a swivel joint. The main body consists of a mater and limb, with the limb meticulously engraved with degree scales and alphanumeric characters in the Abjad system. The openwork rete is intricately pierced and engraved with scrolling foliate and arabesque motifs, uniquely incorporating four zoomorphic figures resembling gazelles or antelopes within the decorative framework. The pointed tips of the foliate scrolls serve as star pointers. A pivoted horizontal rule is mounted across the front, featuring engraved scales and markings, and is held in place by a central pin and wedge. Through the openwork of the rete, the engraved altitude and azimuth lines of the underlying plate are clearly visible.
