Lot 128: A REVERSE GLASS PAINTED CALLIGRAPHIC DEVOTIONAL PANEL, OTTOMAN, CIRCA 1900

A rectangular calligraphic devotional panel executed as a reverse glass painting. The composition is arranged in multiple registers featuring polychrome pigments and gilding. The central circular medallion contains the word Allah in Thuluth script on a blue ground, surrounded by twelve radiating lobes each inscribed with one of the Names of Allah (Asma ul-Husna). A horizontal cartouche at the top centre features the Basmala (Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim). The corresponding lower cartouche contains a verse from Surah Ash-Shams (91:8). The four corner panels contain further Qur’anic inscriptions, including text from Surah Al-Qadr. Flanking the central calligraphic section are two vertical panels depicting still-life arrangements of pink flowers in footed golden vases set beneath striped ablaq arches. The entire composition is enclosed within a border of gilded scrolling foliate arabesques on a dark ground. The work is set within a simple blue-painted wooden frame.
