Lot 2: A HAJJ CERTIFICATE DEPICTING THE HOLY SITES OF MECCA AND MEDINA AND DATED 1331 AH

This hand-painted Hajj certificate, known as a Hajnama, is executed in ink, watercolor, and gold on paper. The document is dated Dhu al-Hijjah 1231 AH, corresponding to October or November 1912–1913 AD. The composition is organised into multiple registers and panels providing a schematic and architectural record of the pilgrimage sites. The right panel features a plan of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, with the Kaaba rendered in black and gold at the center, surrounded by a circular gold halo representing the mataf. The central panel depicts the Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina, dominated by the Green Dome and flanked by minarets and palm trees. To the left of the central imagery is a block of Arabic calligraphy in naskh script containing the legal testimony of the pilgrimage. The far left margin contains several witness signatures and attestations. The top, bottom, and side registers include smaller vignettes of other significant sites, including Safa and Marwa, Mount Arafat, and various shrines.
