Lot 192: A QAJAR LACQUER AND KHATAM-KARI DOUBLE SIDED PANEL FEATURING A COURTLY PORTRAIT, 19TH CENTURY

Features a central painted lacquer portrait of a bearded man in courtly attire, wearing a tall black kula hat and a maroon-colored khilat robe decorated with a dense boteh pattern. The subject holds a blue book with gold-colored ornamental motifs. The portrait is set against a cream-colored background with gold-painted floral scrolls. The composition is enclosed by multiple borders, including an inner gold-patterned band, a wide illuminated border with blue, gold, and white floral motifs, a red painted margin, and an outermost frame of khatam-kari micro-mosaic. The reverse side is decorated entirely in khatam-kari marquetry, featuring a large central six-pointed star motif. The inlay is composed of thousands of tiny geometric elements made of wood, bone, and brass, including green-stained pieces. The central field is surrounded by concentric geometric borders.
