Lot 164: A SILVER INLAID BRONZE MACE, TIBETAN OR KOREAN, 19TH CENTURY

Constructed from two interlocking cylindrical iron sections designed to resemble a decorative baton or a component of a scholar’s yatate (ink and brush set). The exterior surfaces of both the hilt and the sheath are decorated with chased and engraved (scrolling foliage) patterns. These motifs are bordered by bands of geometric fretwork at the pommel, throat, and terminal. The shorter upper section serves as the hilt, featuring a rounded, bulbous pommel and housing a fixed steel spike with a rectangular cross-section. The longer section acts as the sheath and includes an integrated suspension loop at the throat. Attached to the loop is a dark, braided textile cord with a cast metal toggle in a scroll or animal form.
