Lot 16: AN ARABIC GRAMMAR MANSCRIPT IBN AL-HAJIB. KAFIYAT DHUWI AL-ADAB FI MARIFAT KALAM AL-ARAB, 944 AH - 1537 A.D.

This is a 16th-century Islamic manuscript of Ibn al-Hajibs celebrated work on Arabic grammar, titled on the opening page as Kafiyat dhuwi al-adab fi marifat kalam al-arab, a version of Al-Kafiyah fi al-Nahw. According to the colophon, the manuscript was completed on the 29th of Rabi al-Thani 944 AH (approximately late September 1537 CE) in the town of Akhlat, located in modern-day eastern Turkey and historically part of Greater Armenia. The text is written in a clear Naskh script using black ink, with headings, keywords, and overlinings in red. The volume features extensive marginal commentaries and glosses in multiple hands throughout, indicating its use as a scholarly textbook. The title page includes a section on morphology (al-Tasrif) and a four-line poem regarding the complexity of the text. The colophon identifies the scribe as Yusuf ibn Yaqub ibn Ishaq Alekhlasi. The volume is bound in later 19th-century marbled paper over boards, which has been rebacked with an orange mesh-like cloth. A blue oval ownership stamp is visible on the final page.
