Description

This Qajar molded pottery tile from 19th-century Persia features a central circular medallion depicting the classical literary scene of Khusrau visiting Shirin. The composition is divided horizontally: the upper section shows a royal figure on horseback with an attendant, while the lower section depicts a partially-clad female figure seated by a stream with a fish, surrounded by attendants and a grazing horse. The scene is set against a vibrant cobalt blue ground and is framed by floral spandrels and an outer border of black-and-white scrolling vines. The tile is executed using the cuerda seca technique with polychrome glazes in shades of turquoise, pink, yellow, and manganese. The unglazed reverse shows a rough, grayish body with remnants of mortar.
