Lot 94:
Description
A Qajar Tehran molded pottery tile, dating to the 19th century. The rectangular polychrome glazed ceramic tile is decorated in relief with a central figure in traditional dress mounted on a white horse. The rider, wearing a turquoise and pink robe and a patterned turban, is set against a deep cobalt blue ground. The figure is depicted reaching toward a large mythical bird with elaborate tail plumage. The composition is further detailed with stylized architectural structures, floral sprigs, and scrolling clouds. A white-ground border featuring a continuous vine and leaf motif frames the top of the scene. The tile is produced using a molding technique to create the raised decorative elements. The unglazed reverse is rough and exhibits staining and firing irregularities.
