Description
A SET OF CUERDA SECA POLYCHROME GLAZED EARTHENWARE TILES, TUNISIA, 18H CENTURY
A set of polychrome glazed earthenware tiles executed in the Safavid style using the cuerda seca technique. The tiles form a repeating decorative pattern featuring large, teardrop-shaped palmettes or boteh motifs filled with internal floral sprays, surrounded by scrolling foliate and floral elements. The color palette consists of cobalt blue, turquoise, ochre, and green against a white ground, with the designs outlined in a dark manganese glaze. Each tile is constructed with a thick, hand-formed earthenware body. The reverse of the tiles shows significant mortar residue from previous architectural installation.
