Description

A QAJAR GOLD AND SILVER INLAID STEEL SHIELD (SIPAR), PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY

A Qajar gold and silver steel shield, or sipar, from 19th-century Persia. The circular steel body features a convex surface decorated with extensive gold and silver-colored koftgari inlay. The central field is composed of a starburst motif surrounded by dense foliate patterns in a silvery metal. Four prominent hemispherical bosses are set into the face, each decorated with golden floral designs. An outer border consists of calligraphic cartouches containing Arabic or Persian script, set within a continuous golden frame of scrolling foliage. The reverse of the shield is lined with a faded red quilted fabric and retains its four metal attachment rings with remnants of corded straps.
