Description
A TRADITIONAL PALESTINIAN OR SYRIAN THOBE/DRESS WITH OTTOMAN COIN DECORATION, EARLY 20TH CENTURY
This traditional Palestinian or Syrian thobe is constructed from a black textile base featuring terracotta-colored applied bands and geometric hand-embroidery across the yoke, sleeves, and back. The garment is distinguished by a large, triangular bib-like arrangement on the chest composed of numerous silver-colored coins. These coins feature Ottoman-style tughras and Arabic inscriptions, with several specimens displaying the date AH 1327, corresponding to approximately 1909 CE. The embroidery patterns and construction techniques are characteristic of regional Palestinian textile traditions.
