Description
A Qajar coco-de-mer beggar’s bowl, or kashkul, from 19th-century Iran. This vessel is fashioned from a polished coco de mer (Lodoicea maldivica) shell, featuring a deep brown, lustrous finish and a characteristic fine-grained, fibrous surface texture. A large opening with a scalloped edge is cut into the upper surface to form the bowl. The shell is fitted at one end with a hinged brass ring and a circular mounting plate, designed for a carrying chain.
