AN OTTOMAN CARVED WOOD AND MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID PIPE RACK, TURKEY, 19TH CENTURY
This Ottoman pipe rack is constructed from carved wood and features a pierced pediment centered by a geometric mother-of-pearl inlay. The rectangular frame contains two tiers of turned mashrabiya lattice-work separated by a central horizontal panel. This panel bears a line of Arabic calligraphy in light pigment against a dark ground, translating approximately as And heal the heart with what it desires. The rack is designed with two narrow shelves, the upper of which is pierced with four notched circular apertures for the storage of smoking pipes. The frame is further detailed with turned finials at the corners and a shaped lower apron. The reverse side retains metal mounting hardware and a cord for wall suspension.
