Description

A 19th-century Persian Qajar brass planispheric astrolabe. The instrument is constructed of brass and consists of a central mater with a raised rim, a calligraphic throne (kursi), and a circular suspension ring. The assembly includes six interchangeable climate plates (tympans) engraved with stereographic projections for different latitudes. A pierced fretwork rete with star pointers is positioned above the plates. The instrument is completed by a sighting alidade and is held together by a central pin and a horse-shaped wedge. The entire surface is engraved with Arabic script, including astronomical tables, scales, star names, and religious or dedicatory inscriptions on the kursi.
