A PAINTED WOOD QUR’AN STAND RAHALA, INDIA, PROBABLY KASHMIR, EARLY 20TH CENTURY

This wooden book stand, known as a Rahala, features a traditional X-frame folding construction. The piece is decorated with lacquer and hand-painted polychrome floral motifs. The exterior surfaces are finished with dense vegetal scrollwork in shades of gold, russet, and cream. The upper panel contains a central medallion depicting a floral bouquet, while the lower supports incorporate openwork foliate carvings. The interior rest displays gold-tone fern-like patterns against a black ground, framed by a stylized mihrab arch. The top edges of the stand are finished with a serrated or crenellated pattern.
