Description
AN INDIAN STONE FIGURE OF A SURASUNDARI, CENTRAL INDIA, CIRCA 10TH CENTURY
An Indian stone figure of a surasundari, Central India, circa 10th century. This carved stone architectural relief fragment depicts a standing female figure, identified as a surasundari, rendered in a style characteristic of medieval temple sculpture. The figure is carved in high relief against a rectangular block and is shown in a thrice-bent tribhanga posture. She is adorned with jewelry including a necklace, armlets, and a waistband. Her hair is styled in a circular bun at the back of the head. The figure holds a vertical object in her raised left hand. The reverse of the stone slab displays rough-hewn chisel markings. The piece is presented on a modern black metal display stand.
