Description
This illuminated Mamluk double leaf from a Quran, likely produced in Egypt or Syria during the 14th or 15th century, is executed in ink, gold, and pigments on paper. The recto and verso each feature five lines of bold calligraphic Muhaqqaq script in black ink, comprising verses from Surah An-Nisa. The text is punctuated by small circular verse markers in gold and blue. The recto is further embellished with a pointed lobed marginal medallion, or shamsa, intricately detailed in gold, blue, and red. The leaf is tipped onto a larger modern paper support.
