Lot 275:
Description
This lot features an Indian chess board on a European table, showcasing a square white marble top with intricate parchin kari or pietra dura inlay. The central game board is composed of various multi-colored semi-precious and hardstone squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern. This central element is surrounded by a wide border of scrolling foliate and floral vines interspersed with avian motifs. The marble top is set into a European-style ebonized wood base. The frame is designed with four cabriole legs and is adorned with decorative gilt-metal ormolu mounts, including winged putti at the knees, central floral swags on the aprons, and foliate sabots. The construction reflects a late 19th or early 20th-century manufacture, combining traditional Indian stone-working techniques with European furniture forms.
