Description
This 12th century Khorasan bronze chess piece is modeled as a pawn, consistent with medieval Islamic examples from the Iranian region. The object is cast in bronze and features a bell-shaped body surmounted by a multi-tiered, tapered finial. The exterior is decorated with two horizontal bands of relief-molded scrolling and braided patterns positioned near the shoulder and the base. The flat underside contains a central circular opening leading to a hollow interior.
