Description
AN INDO-PORTUGUESE DEVOTIONAL FIGURE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, GOA, 18TH CENTURY
This Indo-Portuguese devotional figure of the Immaculate Conception dates to the 18th century. The figure features a face and hands of carved bone or ivory-toned material with a serene expression. The head is adorned with long, light-brown curly hair and a small metallic crown. The figure is dressed in a white silk-like gown and a vibrant blue satin cloak, both detailed with elaborate raised gold-tone bullion embroidery in floral and foliate motifs. The figure stands atop a blue-painted orb encircled by a gilded band, with a sculpted snake beneath her feet representing the triumph over original sin. The piece is mounted on a tiered, octagonal pedestal with gilded and polychrome finishes.
