Description
This Coptic textile fragment is a tapestry-woven roundel, or orbiculus, dating from the Byzantine period, circa 4th to 9th century AD. The piece is worked in polychrome wool and linen. It features a central medallion with a deep red field decorated with stylized figural or vegetal motifs in cream and black. A decorative border of repeating geometric patterns encircles the central design. The fragment is partially attached to a section of plain-woven tan fabric.
