Lot 242:
Description
A tapestry-woven textile fragment of wool and linen, dating from approximately the 4th to 8th century A.D. The design features a large central medallion containing a smaller inner circle, surrounded by four lobed compartments. Each compartment encloses stylized anthropomorphic or zoomorphic figures. The motifs are executed in a pale tan or undyed yarn against a deep purple-brown ground. Horizontal bands of repeating geometric patterns border the central design at the top and bottom. The construction and iconography are characteristic of Late Antique Egyptian production. A small, blank paper label is adhered to one corner.
