Description
AN OTTOMAN METAL THREAD EMBROIDERY TEXTILE WITH TUGHRA, TURKEY, 19TH CENTURY
This framed textile fragment from the Ottoman Empire features an imperial calligraphic monogram, or tughra, executed in raised metallic gold-toned embroidery. The monogram is worked onto an irregularly shaped piece of red silk or satin, which is mounted upon a larger, rectangular ground of dark red fabric. The embroidery utilizes high-relief metallic threads to create the complex calligraphic forms characteristic of 19th-century Ottoman textile production. The piece is housed in a simple white frame with a hardboard backing and cord hanging hardware.
