Lot 226:
Description
This 20th-century Orientalist oil on board painting is signed Francois Maura in the upper left. The composition depicts a bustling North African or Middle Eastern street scene rendered with visible impasto and a loose, impressionistic technique. The scene features multiple figures in traditional attire, including white robes and turbans, positioned before arched doorways and a distant domed structure. The work is housed in a wide, dark-stained, and heavily carved wooden frame featuring a decorative herringbone pattern and four inlaid geometric bone or ivory-colored cartouches. A gilded inner liner surrounds the board. The reverse of the support shows a textured surface with a triangular hanging wire and a small blue rectangular inventory or gallery stamp.
