Description
A LARGE ORIENTALIST AXEL HERMAN HAIG ARAB STUDENTS CAIRO EGYPT ETCHING 1890
An etching on paper by Axel Herman Haig titled Arab Students, Cairo, Egypt. This Orientalist work depicts a group of figures in traditional robes and turbans seated on a carpeted floor within a mosque or madrasa interior. Several individuals are shown reading from large texts resting on ornate folding stands, while others engage in conversation. The architectural setting features columns, arches, and large hanging lamps. The plate is marked with the artist monogram and the date 90 in the lower right corner. A faint pencil signature is present in the lower margin. The piece is housed in a carved wooden frame with gilt accents and a wide white mat. The reverse features a wooden backing board with various handwritten inventory markings including MAR 273066 and a circled 371 above date sequences.
