Description
AN OIL ON CANVAS DEPICTS A PORTRAIT OF MOHAMMAD ALI SHAH QAJAR, SIGNED MUSAVVIR AL MULK, 19TH – 20TH CENTURY
This oil on canvas portrait depicts Mohammad Ali Shah Qajar and is signed in Persian script in the lower left corner, reading Musavvir al-Mulk. The subject is rendered from the chest up in a realist style, wearing a dark blue uniform featuring a red stand-up collar, epaulettes, a leather cross-belt, and two large breast ornaments set with rows of green and white stones. He is shown with a mustache and wears a traditional black tall hat, or kula, adorned with a white aigrette and a central architectural ornament. The portrait is composed within an oval vignette against a dark, neutral background. The painting is housed in a rectangular gilt wood frame with molded decorative borders. The reverse reveals a stained canvas secured to a wooden stretcher.
