Description
AN OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING DEPICTS FATH ALI SHAH QAJAR, PERSIA, 19TH – 20TH CENTURY
This oil on canvas depicts Fath-Ali Shah Qajar, the second Shah of Qajar Iran. The subject is portrayed half-length with a long black beard and a tall, jeweled crown known as a taj, which is topped with three black aigrettes. He wears a green royal robe heavily embellished with pearls and various jewels. His right hand rests on the hilt of a dagger tucked into a jeweled belt, while his left hand holds a string of prayer beads. A blue cartouche to the right of the figure contains a Persian inscription that reads Shah Qajar Fath-Ali Al-Sultan. The portrait is set against a muted blue-gray background. The work is mounted on a coarse-weave canvas and remains on its original wooden stretcher.
