Description
A RARE OTTOMAN MINIATURE DEPICTING A LEVANT BARBER, TURKEY, 18TH CENTURY
This Ottoman illustrated manuscript leaf, executed in ink and opaque pigments on paper, depicts a Levant barber scene set beneath a wooden structure from which two weighted vessels are suspended. The central composition features a barber in a red vest and white turban shaving the head of a seated man, while an attendant stands to the right holding a fan. Several lines of Arabic script at the base identify the figures as Usta Muhammad al-Bushi, the head of the barbers in Damascus, and Jawkhadar Pasha. The inscription notes the event occurred upon the latter’s return from Hajj in Muharram 1155 AH, which corresponds to circa 1742 CE. The work is characteristic of the Turkish miniature tradition of the mid-18th century.
