Description

This fine group of Qajar lacquer playing cards, Persia, 18th–19th century, is executed in papier-mache and richly decorated with vivid pigments and gilt. Each rectangular card is painted with figures in courtly and theatrical poses, mythological beings, or musicians, all within ornamental borders. 

Comparable examples are preserved in the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1914,0518,0.2.1-6; 2000,0613.1-4; OA+, 0.329).
