Lot 188:
Description
This 18th-century casket box is constructed from tortoiseshell and features a rippled serpentine form. The rectangular body is characterized by undulating, scalloped sides and a matching domed lid. The exterior is accented with silver-tone metal mounts at the corners, hinges, and keyhole escutcheon, each featuring ornate foliate and scrollwork motifs. A central, unengraved oval metal plaque is inset into the lid. The interior showcases the natural translucency and mottled patterning of the tortoiseshell material. The construction includes small metal pins used to secure the decorative mounts to the tortoiseshell frame.
