Description
AN OTTOMAN MOTHER-OF-PEARL AND TORTOISESHELL INLAID WOODEN CASKET, TURKEY, 18TH – 19TH CENTURY
This casket-shaped chest is constructed with a wooden frame featuring intricate Ottoman geometric parquetry inlay. The decorative surfaces are composed of mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell arranged in complex patterns of alternating triangles and diamonds across the exterior body and the sloped, hinged lid. The chest is elevated on four bracket feet and is fitted with an ornamental metal lock plate and latch. The interior is lined with deep red velvet and includes a partitioned side compartment for smaller items.
