Lot 183:
Description
An Islamic Persian handmade box, typically identified as a qalamdan or pen box. The item is constructed of wood with a thick, carved gesso overlay. The long sides feature high-relief Arabic calligraphy in thuluth script. One side is inscribed with the Salawat prayer for Muhammad and his family, while the reverse side bears the inscription And success is from Allah. The sliding lid is ornamented with central calligraphic cartouches set within dense floral scrollwork borders. The surface retains remnants of gilding and dark pigments against a cream-colored ground.
