Description
A NORTH INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING OF THE SUFI SAINT ABDUL QADIR JILANI, PUNJAB HILLS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
An Indian miniature painting depicting the Sufi saint Abdul Qadir Jilani, as suggested by the accompanying script. The work is executed in opaque pigments and gold on paper. The central figure is portrayed with a golden nimbus, wearing green robes and holding prayer beads while seated on a carpeted terrace. He is attended by a standing servant with a morchal (peacock feather fly-whisk) and two seated men. The setting features a white marble jali railing, a large tree, and a flowering tree in the distance under a blue sky. The painting is set within a broad pink border containing several lines of Persian or Urdu calligraphy in black ink, surrounded by a dark outer border.
