Description

A DECCANI MINIATURE PAINTING OF HAZRAT NIZAMUDDIN AULIYA AND AMIR KHUSROW, INDIA, 17TH – 18TH CENTURY

An Indian miniature painting executed in opaque pigments and gold on paper. The scene depicts two seated figures on a terrace, identified by black Nasta’liq inscriptions as the Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and his disciple, the poet and musician Amir Khusrow. Amir Khusrow is positioned on the left playing a stringed instrument, while Nizamuddin Auliya sits to the right holding a staff. The composition is set against a garden background with cypress trees and a stylized sky. The central image is framed by decorative gold and cobalt blue borders within a wide vermilion margin. The reverse of the folio shows heavy discoloration and evidence of historical repairs.
