AN ILLUSTRATION MINIATURE TO A RAGAMALA SERIES: HINDOL RAGA, INDIAN SCHOOL, LUCKNOW, 18TH CENTURY
This Indian miniature painting, executed in opaque watercolor and gold on paper, is an illustration from a Ragamala series depicting Hindol Raga. The central composition features the blue-skinned deity Krishna seated upon a golden swing, or hindola, in a lush garden setting. He is attended by four female figures, two on either side, dressed in traditional attire. The background consists of dense green trees set against a dark, turbulent sky with stylized clouds and several birds, including a peacock perched on the swing frame. The central scene is framed by an inner border of gold floral scrolls on a dark ground, followed by a wide, tan outer margin decorated with gold flecks. The verso of the leaf features a central rectangular panel containing six lines of Nasta’liq calligraphy in black ink, set against an illuminated gold background and enclosed within simple ruled borders.
