Description

AN OTTOMAN TURQUOISE AND CORAL-INLAID GOLD DAMASCENED STEEL DAGGER (JAMBIYYA), 19TH CENTURY

An Ottoman turquoise and coral-inlaid gold damascened steel dagger, known as a jambiyya, dating to the 19th century. The curved steel blade is decorated with gold-inlaid koftgari Arabic calligraphy and a decorative motif at the base. The hilt and the obverse of the scabbard are constructed from gilt metal, densely adorned with teardrop-shaped coral cabochons and small turquoise beads set within intricate filigree work. The reverse of both the hilt and scabbard displays chased and engraved silver-toned metal with elaborate foliate and geometric patterns. This style of ornamentation is characteristic of 19th-century Ottoman production, often associated with regions such as Trabzon or the Balkans.
