ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 80:
Description
This rectangular silver amulet plaque is intricately engraved and inlaid with black niello, presenting a dense arrangement of talismanic inscriptions and geometric symbolism associated with Sufi devotional practices. The front is dominated by a central square-and-diagonal grid enclosing Qur’anic invocations, protective phrases, and a six-pointed star motif, all meticulously rendered in crisp, dark niello that contrasts beautifully with the polished silver ground. Surrounding bands of flowing script further enhance the complexity and spiritual potency of the composition.
The reverse features additional engraved invocations and a soldered silver loop for suspension, indicating its intended use as a wearable protective charm. Areas of natural patination and gentle wear attest to its age and long devotional handling. Amulets of this type are prized for their combination of fine craftsmanship, spiritual significance, and richly layered calligraphic design. This example stands out for its exceptional clarity, balanced layout, and well-preserved niello work.
