Description

A finely crafted Persian steel shield (separ) from the Qajar period, lavishly decorated with extensive gold damascening. The convex circular surface is centred by a raised boss surrounded by four prominent domed appliqués, each bordered with traces of gilt. Radiating from the centre are alternating panels of geometric and foliate motifs, meticulously inlaid in gold and arranged in a starburst pattern. The outer register is encircled by a dense band of scrolling arabesques, calligraphic cartouches, and stylised palmettes, all executed with characteristic Qajar finesse.

The rim retains a gilt-bronze border that highlights the overall composition. The reverse is lined with the original leather backing, now worn and patinated with age, and fitted with its traditional rope and ring-handles.

Displaying both martial functionality and luxurious ornamentation, this shield exemplifies the splendour of Qajar metalwork in the 19th century. A striking and collectable piece of Persian arms and armour.
