ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 52:
Description
A finely decorated Indo-Persian steel sipar shield, richly inlaid in the “Ganga Jamuna” technique, combining both silver and gold to striking effect. The circular face is adorned with an intricate network of interlacing arabesques, scrolling tendrils, and geometric knotwork, all executed in exceptionally fine koftgari inlay. Four prominent domed bosses, each with petal-form surrounds, are arranged around a central star design, lending the shield both structural and visual emphasis.
The outer border features a continuous band of intertwining motifs, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with 19th-century North Indian and Persianate armour-making traditions. The steel surface shows a deep, even patina, enhancing the contrast between the dark ground and the precious metal inlay.
The reverse retains its original four ring attachments for grip straps, now missing, with the interior exhibiting expected oxidation from age.
