Lot 49:
Description
An exceptional example of North Indian royal craftsmanship, this gold coloured cane handle from the 19th century showcases the splendor and finesse of traditional Mughal enamel work. The handle is exquisitely adorned with rubies, emeralds, and diamonds, intricately set within rich floral and foliate designs rendered in vibrant red, green, blue, and white enamels.
The object’s surface is fully decorated with dense enamelled patterns of intertwining vines and blossoms, symbolizing prosperity and eternal life. The top of the handle features a striking rosette motif centered with a green emerald and outlined with white petals, surrounded by red floral sprays against a white ground. Gold detailing accentuates every contour, giving the piece a radiant luminosity.
The curved form of the handle demonstrates both elegance and ergonomic sophistication, while the underside reveals fine champlevé enamel work in geometric motifs of blue and green with a central red triangle — a testament to the artistry and technical mastery of Indian goldsmiths of the period.
Each view highlights a different facet of the craftsmanship: one angle reveals the gentle curve of the form and richly enamelled floral motifs; another emphasizes the inset gemstones glowing against their enamel ground; while the end view captures the layered enamel design with gold outlining and precise color balance.
