Description

An exceptional and richly worked Deccani textile featuring an elaborate composition of calligraphic and floral motifs executed in metallic silver thread, coloured silk, turquoise-blue stones, and small glass beads. At the centre, a stylised tree or floral vase motif is formed entirely from interlaced calligraphy, rendered in soft pink embroidery and framed by scrolling foliage picked out in shimmering metallic threads and dotted with turquoise bead accents.

Surrounding the central panel is a striking border of bold Qur’anic or devotional inscriptions worked in vibrant turquoise embroidery against a gilt-infused ground, creating a dramatic chromatic contrast. The density and precision of the needlework, combined with the incorporation of stones and glass beads, are characteristic of high-quality Deccan court textiles, which often blended Islamic calligraphy with luxuriant decorative ornament.

The textile is mounted and framed for display. Age-related wear, small losses, and areas of oxidation to the metallic thread are visible, consistent with its age and materials. Despite these expected signs of age, the colours remain vivid, and the overall composition retains strong visual impact.

A rare and highly decorative surviving example of Deccani textile art, combining devotional calligraphy with opulent courtly craftsmanship.
