Description

A finely woven Safavid velvet fragment displaying a classic repeating design of elegant courtly figures set within cusped ogival cartouches. Each figure is shown standing amidst stylised floral sprays, rendered in a harmonious palette of warm reds, soft golds, and muted creams—typical of high-quality Safavid velvet production. The intricate lattice of scrolling vines and palmettes surrounding the cartouches reflects the refined artistry and luxurious aesthetic of 17th-century Persian textile workshops.

The fragment has been carefully mounted onto a complementary gold-toned backing for stability and presentation. Areas of wear, losses, and fading are visible throughout, consistent with the textile’s age and historical use, yet the design remains clear and visually appealing.

A beautiful surviving example of Safavid textile craftsmanship, showcasing the sophistication and iconography of one of Persia’s most celebrated artistic periods.
