A rare and beautifully crafted pair of arched wooden window doors from Gujarat, India, dating to the 19th century and lavishly inlaid throughout with shimmering mother-of-pearl plaques. The front surfaces are fully covered in small, diamond-shaped mother-of-pearl tesserae arranged in tight geometric patterning, each piece individually pinned, creating a luminous effect that shifts with the light. The scalloped arch is outlined with a similarly inlaid border, adding further elegance to the form.
The doors retain their original metal fittings, including circular ring handles and decorative bosses, all patinated with age. The reverse is covered in a rich red textile lining with a subtle woven pattern, offering a striking contrast to the opalescent façade.
This type of mother-of-pearl inlay work is characteristic of Gujarat, where artisans perfected the technique for luxury objects and architectural elements from the 17th century onward. The present example exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship and refined aesthetic associated with the region’s decorative arts. A rare survival in very good condition, suitable for both architectural incorporation and standalone display.
