ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 23:
Description
A beautifully compiled album (muraqqa‘) containing a collection of Islamic calligraphic panels from Persian and Indian traditions, dating to the 19th century. The album brings together multiple folios, each showcasing elegant examples of nasta‘liq script in black ink with gold and colored backgrounds, demonstrating both Persian refinement and Mughal-Indian decorative flair.
Several panels are signed or bear seals of known calligraphers, set within richly illuminated floral and geometric borders, with each folio mounted on later patterned album pages. The combination of Persian poetic inscriptions, fine gilding, and stylistic diversity suggests the album was assembled by a collector or connoisseur to celebrate the art of the written word.
Bound in a folding album format with decorative paper covers and gilt details, the work exemplifies the cross-cultural exchange between Qajar Iran and Mughal India.
