ISLAMIC, INDIAN ART & JEWELS
Lot 22:
Description
A rare pair of Maghribi Qur’an manuscripts, each containing sections (juz’) of the Holy Qur’an, written in bold black Maghribi script with red diacritical marks and ornamental verse separators in gold, red, and blue. Both manuscripts display the refined tradition of Qur’anic calligraphy from North Africa, likely Morocco or Algeria, during the 17th centuries.
Each manuscript opens with intricately decorated geometric frontispieces, richly colored in gold, red, blue, and green — classic examples of Maghribi manuscript illumination. The text is framed by double red borders, and surah headings are executed in gold within decorative panels.
These volumes demonstrate the distinctive regional manuscript tradition of the western Islamic world, where Maghribi calligraphy flourished as a symbol of both artistic and spiritual devotion.
