Description

An impressive and finely hand-forged iron door lock from India, dating to the 18th–19th century. The lock is richly ornamented with intricate pierced and engraved detailing, featuring a pair of opposing stylized peacocks flanking a central finial above the locking mechanism. The rectangular plate and bolt are adorned with geometric and floral perforations, combining utility with artistic craftsmanship.

The lock retains its original hand-forged key, and the reverse reveals the complex internal mechanism, a testament to the ingenuity of Indian metalworkers. The piece is highlighted with traces of gilt finish, enhancing its decorative appeal. Such elaborate locks were often used on temple or palace doors, symbolizing protection and prosperity.
