Description

A beautifully preserved Ottoman calligraphic album (murakka‘) presented in concertina (accordion) form, featuring fine examples of Arabic calligraphy executed in black ink with gold and colored highlights. Each panel is framed within exquisitely marbled paper borders (ebru), characteristic of Ottoman artistic taste.

The album comprises a series of calligraphic exercises, each displaying verses and sayings rendered in a bold yet elegant naskh and thuluth script. The balance of line, spacing, and rhythm demonstrates the mastery of a trained Ottoman calligrapher. One panel is signed “Hassan” and bears a date, attesting to the work’s authenticity and individuality.

Bound in its original marbled paper covers, the album opens accordion-style, allowing multiple folios to be displayed simultaneously—a format often used for private study, teaching, or refined calligraphic appreciation.

An outstanding example of Ottoman devotional and aesthetic calligraphy, reflecting both artistic discipline and spiritual refinement.
